This immersive Pangot Himalayan Birding Tour is designed for birdwatchers and nature lovers seeking rich avian diversity in the lower Himalayas. Based in the serene forests of Pangot near Nainital, the tour explores some of the region’s finest birding habitats, including Kilbury Forest Reserve, Cheena Peak Range, Snow View Point, and surrounding oak–pine–rhododendron forests. With guided morning and afternoon birding walks, scenic forest drives, and stays at a specialized birding lodge, the tour offers excellent opportunities to observe Himalayan pheasants, raptors, flycatchers, warblers, and laughing thrushes in their natural environment.

Itinerary

Day 01: Kathgodam to Pangot

Arrive at Kathgodam railway station, where you will be warmly received and driven to your nature retreat in Pangot (approximately 52 km / 2 hours). The scenic mountain drive winds through dense oak and pine forests, offering beautiful views of the Kilbury Forest Reserve and the lower Himalayan valleys along the way.

Upon arrival at Pangot, check in at the lodge. After some time to freshen up, set out for a birding session around Pangot and its forest trails. Birding may be combined with gentle nature walks in the surrounding areas.

Return to the resort by evening to relax amid serene forest surroundings.

Day 02: Pangot

Spend this entire day immersed in birdwatching in Pangot, a paradise for Himalayan avifauna. Begin with an early morning birding excursion to Cheena Peak, carrying a packed breakfast to maximize your time in the field. This picturesque trail offers breathtaking views and excellent birding opportunities. You will explore the surrounding forested areas and hidden trails, where the rich biodiversity of the region comes to life.

Venture into the nearby woods and streamside habitats, which serve as prime feeding and nesting grounds for an array of species. Keep a keen eye out for the elusive Cheer Pheasant, Koklass Pheasant, and Hill Partridge, alongside other sought-after Himalayan birds. The dense vegetation and water sources may also reveal a variety of smaller bird species, adding to the excitement of the day.

As dusk falls, step out once more for an evening birding session, focusing on nocturnal species. Late-evening owling offers a chance to spot species such as the Himalayan Owl and Mountain Scops Owl, adding a thrilling dimension to your Pangot experience.

After an enriching day in the wilderness, return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay, reflecting on the incredible sightings and experiences of the day.

Day 03: Pangot to Kathgodam

Spend a final morning in Pangot, making the most of the golden-hour light before breakfast. After a leisurely late breakfast, check out and begin your drive to Kathgodam railway station for your onward journey. Enjoy the final views of the Kumaon hills as you descend through forested roads and mountain valleys, carrying with you memorable birding experiences from Pangot and the surrounding Himalayan forests.
