Pangot

Pangot is one such beautiful hamlet in the state of Uttarakhand, which lies just 15 km from the city of Nainital. Walking into Pangot is like stepping into a remote Himalayan village. This birdwatchers' paradise has 250+ species of birds in and around, as recorded by Jungle Lore Birding Lodge. This Lodge is India's first and foremost birding lodge and has been key to birding success in the region. The entire drive is through the forested area of Cheena Peak Range via Snow View Point and Kilbury, the main habitats for excellent birding. The forests of Pangot and the surrounding areas are dominated by thick Oak, Pine, and Rhododendron. The streams passing by the area make it an even more attractive place. The district of Nainital covers the tropical, subtropical, temperate, sub-alpine, and alpine zones. The Terai & Bhabar belt presents the climate of the plain,s while the deep valleys with elevations up to 1000 Mts. play host to varied types of animals, birds, and trees typical of hills as well as plains.

Jageshwar

Jageshwar in the state of Uttarakhand lies in the Subtropical – Alpine forest zone. The region has coniferous trees such as Cheer, Pine, and Deodar, along with a mixed forest of Oak and Rhododendron. The deodar's forests at the lower altitude and the pine cover further up are the perfect habitat for many bird species. Your birding guide will be happy to initiate you into the world of bird watching.

Day 01: Kathgodam to Pangot

Arrive at Kathgodam and embark on a scenic drive to Pangot. The journey takes you through picturesque hills and the lush forests of the Cheena Peak Range, passing through Snow View Point and Kilbury, known for their rich wildlife. 

Upon reaching Pangot, check in at your resort and enjoy a leisurely evening. Take this time to unwind and immerse yourself in the peaceful ambiance of this charming hill station. You may also explore the lodge’s surroundings for a delightful birdwatching experience.

Day 02: Pangot

Dedicate this full day to birding in the scenic locales of Pangot village, Baggar, Cheena Pea,k and Gughu Khan, guided by a local expert who will help you spot and identify the region's rich avian diversity. Start your day early to make the most of the prime bird-watching hours, as you head into the serene trails and forested areas surrounding these picturesque spots.

Your guide will take you through the verdant campus of Jungle Lore Birding Lodge, an ideal place for birding due to its dense forest and proximity to various habitats. You’ll explore nearby woods and stream areas, which provide excellent cover and feeding grounds for a variety of bird species. Keep an eye out for favorites like the Cheer Pheasant, Koklass Pheasant, and Hill Partridge, along with other Himalayan avifauna. The streams and wooded areas may also reveal smaller bird species and other wildlife.

After a day filled with rewarding sightings and peaceful immersion in nature, return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay, reflecting on the wonderful sightings and experiences shared throughout this immersive birding day.

Day 03: Pangot to Sattal (Day Trip)

Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, and Dinner

Start your morning immersed in the tranquil beauty of Pangot, exploring its forests and streams while spotting a variety of bird species. After a relaxed late breakfast, check out and embark on a scenic drive to Sattal (55 km / approx. 2 hours), enjoying en route birding stops along the way. 

Spend the day discovering the rich avian diversity of this pristine location before heading back to Pangot in the evening.

Day 04: Pangot to Jageshwar

Meals: Breakfast at Pangot, Lunch and Dinner at Jageshwar
Accommodation: Van Serai

After breakfast, check out from Pangot and embark on a scenic drive to Jageshwar (114 km / approx. 4.5 hrs). Upon arrival, check in at Van Serai, a tranquil wellness boutique lodge. 

After some time to freshen up, spend the rest of the day birdwatching with our expert birding guide, exploring the rich avian diversity of the region.

Day 05: Jageshwar

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Start your day with an early visit to the Jageshwar Shiva Temple, a revered pilgrimage site and one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, where you can take in the tranquil atmosphere and the historical significance of this ancient temple complex. Afterward, return to your lodge for a wholesome breakfast before heading out on a nature trek to Vriddha Jageshwar.

This scenic trek takes you through dense Himalayan forests, offering plenty of opportunities to spot a wide variety of Himalayan bird species, including many endemic ones. As you walk, you will pass through charming Kumaoni villages, where you can interact with the friendly locals, observe their daily lives, and admire the traditional architecture. These villages offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region, with houses made from locally sourced stone and wooden beams, as well as unique Kumaoni customs.

The trek will also provide ample opportunities for wildlife sightings and photography, making it a perfect blend of nature, culture, and spirituality.

Day 06: Jageshwar to Kathgodam

After a hearty breakfast, check out from Jageshwar and begin your drive back to Kathgodam.
